In a time where cinematic universes are all the rave with Marvel, DC, Sonic the Hedgehog, and so many other franchises hoping to expand their universes; one of the most underappreciated is the Monsterverse. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empite is the latest addition to this absurd universe and decides to finally embrace the stupidity.
The film sees Godzilla and Kong reluctantly team up to face evil versions of themselves who threaten the human race. It's ridiculous in concept and director Adam Wingard embraces it with scenes like Kiss' "I Was Made For Lovin' You" playing while Kong gets a power gauntlet. The leads of Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle were great together. Dan Stevens steals every scene with his almost Ace Ventura personality that manages to fit in perfectly with this crazy universe.
Despite Godzilla being in the title of the film, his screentime is ultimately limited to sleeping in the Rome Colosseum like a cat or occassionally beating up giant snakes. The film is certainly centered around Kong who takes care of a smaller ape named Suko in a way that parallels Kratos and Atreus in God of War. Godzilla eventually gets more action in the third act of the film where he helps Kong in saving Earth by freeing Mothra.
The film shines in visual effects with large action sequences that use the chracters' size and strengths in inventive and creative ways. The final fight features gravity changing around them in a way that allows for unique cinematography and an ultimately insane fight sequence.
